Breast Reduction or Reduction Mammoplasty – Plastic Surgery

A breast reduction, also called reduction mammoplasty, is a plastic surgery that aims at reducing over-sized breasts. By removing excess breast tissue and lifting the nipple upwards, the breasts become perkier, lighter and more proportionate with the women’s body.

Over-sized and heavy breasts tend to become saggy and unattractive. This causes women to become uncomfortable with the way they look and dress. Besides emotional distress, breast hypertrophy (over-development) will result in several health problems, such as back and neck pain, breathing difficulties, skeletal distortion and irritating rashes under the breasts.
In that case, a breast reduction surgery is the perfect solution to achieve a more attractive and pleasing bust, in harmony with the women’s physique and self-image.

Am I a good candidate?

The ideal candidates for reduction mammoplasty are healthy women who experience emotional and physical discomfort because of over-developed breasts. Women with over developed breasts who have trouble breathing, sleeping, exercising, finding suitable clothes or maintaining an upright posture are advised to undergo the breast reduction surgery. Women with large disproportionate breasts are also candidates for this procedure.

Patients considering future pregnancies and breastfeeding should postpone breast reduction until afterwards as this surgery might compromise their ability to lactate. Patients considering weight loss are also advised to reschedule the surgery for after they have reached the desired weight.

I will evaluate your general health status and any pre-existing health conditions or risk factors, discuss your options and then recommend a course of treatment accordingly.

How is it done?

Breast reduction is usually done under general anesthesia and takes about three hours, depending on the amount of reduction needed. I will start by making an incision around the areola and down to the breast crease in a lollipop shape, then another incision across the breast sides in the shape of an anchor. Once done, the excess glandular tissue, fat and skin are trimmed away.

I will reposition the nipple and areola to a more natural and youthful height, reduce the enlarged areola if needed then reshape the breast using skin from around the areola. The incisions are then closed with stitches. In some cases, liposuction may be applied to remove excess fat from the armpit area to achieve a more satisfying overall bust contour.

How long is the recovery?

After breast reduction, patients have to wear an elastic bandage and a surgical bra. Few days later, they are replaced with a soft support bra that should be constantly worn over the following three weeks.

The sutures are removed after a week or two. Patients are normally able to resume their work and light activities a week after the surgery. However, during the first week, it is important to avoid any strenuous activities that put pressure on the chest.

The result of your breast reduction is noticeable immediately after surgery, and you will be satisfied with the outcome.

Expectations, complications and pre-operative exams will be discussed during your consultation.
