Chin Augmentation or Mentoplasty – Plastic Surgery

Chin augmentation, also referred to as mentoplasty, is a procedure that enhances the size of the chin in proportion to the facial bone structure.

This plastic surgery is often performed in combination with a nose job (rhinoplasty) in order to achieve a more satisfying facial contour, since the size of the chin may be affected by the new shape of the nose.

Am I a good candidate?

Chin augmentation is a great option for people who feel uncomfortable with the way their face looks; full face or profile. The best candidates are patients with microgenia (receding chins), but with normal jaw function.

I will discuss your options after evaluating your general health status and any pre-existing health conditions or risk factors.

How is it done?
Chin augmentation usually takes about 30 to 45 minutes, unless it is combined with another facial surgery such as rhinoplasty or face lifting.

The procedure can be performed under local or general anesthesia, depending on the patient’s preference and my recommendations.
I will start by making a small incision inside the mouth to create a pocket in which I insert a solid silicon implant just over the bone and along the lower jaw.Once done, the implant will be secured in place by attaching it to the bones and the incision will be closed with fine sutures.

According to the patient’s condition and the size of the implant, the same procedure can be performed through a small incision in the natural crease under the chin.

How long is the recovery?
After surgery, the chin wil be taped to secure the implant’s position and to reduce swelling. Most often, a hospital overnight stay is not needed and you can quickly resume your daily activities, but without excessive efforts during the recovery period.
If the chin augmentation's procedure is done through the mouth, you will be restricted to liquids for the first few days.

The sutures will dissolve after ten days and there will be no external scarring. If the incision was made under the chin, I will remove the sutures after a week and the incision will leave a small and almost invisible scar.

Make sure to ask all the questions concerning what you can expect during the recovery period.
