Eyelid Lift or Blepharoplasty – Plastic Surgery

Changes around the eyes are ones of the earliest signs of aging. These changes are influenced by the eyebrow position, genetics, sun exposure and smoking.

An eyelid lift, or Blepharoplasty, is performed on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both. By removing fat deposits, loose skin, puffiness and bags, this procedure will reverse the effects of time to restore a youthful and refreshed appearance.

Am I a good candidate?

If your eyelids are drooping and there are bags all around your eyes as a result of aging, you may be a good candidate for eyelid surgery. This surgery is also beneficial for those who are born with excessive eyelid sagging that prevents vision.
Eyelid surgery is NOT meant to remove eye wrinkles and dark circles under the eyes nor lift sagging eyebrows.

How is it done?

Upper Eyelid Blepharoplasty:

According to your anatomy and needs, I will discuss the exact changes you desire on your upper eyelid, and then perform accordingly. During surgery, I will remove the excess skin and fat pockets that is preventing your vision or contributing to an aging or tired look.

The incisions are made on the natural skin crease of the lid to reduce visible scarring. Excess fat and skin are trimmed away and the incisions are then closed with fine sutures which are usually removed three to five days after the blepharoplasty surgery. The incisions on the upper eyelids heal extremely well, are easily hidden with makeup, and disappear within two to three weeks.

Some patients have significant asymmetry of their upper eyelids; in this case, different techniques will be performed on each eyelid to achieve a more harmonious result.

Lower Eyelid Blepharoplasty:

Lower eyelid puffiness due to bulging fat is a very common problem, it is removed by making an incision that is hidden on the inside of the lower eyelid (Transconjunctival Blepharoplasty).

If there is excess skin and/ or excess muscle on the lower eyelid, a small incision just beneath the eyelashes is required.

The stitches are usually removed four days following surgery and the scar heals so good that it becomes almost imperceptible in most patients. Some patients need a combination of fat removal and fat repositioning on the lower eyelid.

How long is the recovery?

Postoperative bruising usually takes seven to ten days to subside completely. Swelling takes a bit longer. Most of the swelling goes away within a week or two but this varies greatly from patient to patient. Makeup can be applied to the eyes 24 hours following the removal of sutures. In case of Transconjunctival Blepharoplasty, there are no sutures to be removed.
