Liposuction or Fat Removal – Plastic Surgeries

Liposuction, also referred to as liposculpture, is the surgical removal of localized fat in different areas of the body. This minimally invasive procedure involves a targeted suctioning of the fat to give the body a slim and harmonious appearance.

Although dieting and exercising can help maintain a good level of fitness, they cannot achieve a perfectly sculpted body because of the stubborn fat pockets localized in the abdomen, buttocks, thighs, hips, neck, arms, calves or ankles.
That is why liposuction became one of the most popular cosmetic procedures because it’s a simple and effective way to achieve a more appealing body contour.
Liposuction can also be paired with other plastic surgeries, such as a facelift, breast reduction or tummy tuck.

Am I a good candidate?

Ideal candidates are non-smoker and healthy individuals with a relatively normal weight but who have pockets of excess fat in some areas of their bodies. They should also have good skin elasticity to avoid ending up with sagging skin in the areas where liposuction is performed.

On the other hand, liposuction should not be considered as a substitute for weight loss in overweight people. It is also not suitable for people looking to get rid of stretch marks or cellulite. I will evaluate your general health condition and discuss your options accordingly.

How is it done?
Over the years, several techniques have contributed in turning liposuction into one of the least invasive and most effective cosmetic surgeries.
The procedure is usually done under general anesthesia and takes one to three hours, depending on the amount of fat and areas treated. I start by making several small incisions (2 to 3 mm) in the treatment area, where a special solution is injected. This solution helps expand the fat and makes it easier to remove; it's a medication that helps shrink blood vessels to avoid bleeding and an anesthetic to help reduce the pain.
Then a small cannula is inserted through the incision to suction out the fat. This cannula is linked to a vacuum style pump through a bendable pipe and then targeted towards the resistant fat pockets and a back-and-forth motion is applied to suction the fat cells out. Once done, the incision is closed with minor stitches.

How long is the recovery?
Mild swelling and bruising are natural effects following a liposuction. Special bandages are used on the treated area to help minimize these effects and help the skin adjust to the new body contour.
Usually, patients can resume work and daily activities within few days, depending on the amount of body areas treated. However they should refrain from excessively  tiring activities for at least two weeks.

I will give you appropriate indications on how to care for your treated area. The results of the liposuction may not be clearly noticeable until after the swelling and bruising disappear.

To preserve the new body shape, patients are highly encouraged to keep a healthy lifestyle and avoid unnecessary weight gain that will compromise the achieved results of the liposuction.
